Through a major Innovate UK-funded program, I played a leading role in delivering advanced manufacturing support to SMEs, helping businesses adopt new technologies, improve processes, and access practical innovation support.
Working at the center of this program, I helped connect businesses with specialist expertise in areas including:
CNC production and machining
Automation and process improvement
CAD and digital design
Additive manufacturing
3D scanning and rapid prototyping
Across the businesses supported through the program:
67.4% implemented innovation measures identified through structured assessment
53.3% progressed new products or services closer to market
Average Technology Readiness Level increase of +2.04
These improvements were not theoretical—they were practical changes implemented within real manufacturing environments.
Innovation & Collaboration
Stronger Innovation Capability
The program also helped build long-term innovation capacity within the region:
48.8% of businesses initiated new R&D collaborations
16.3% developed new intellectual property (patents, trademarks, designs, or copyrights)
This helped strengthen connections between SMEs, research organisations, and regional support networks.
Employment and Skills Development
The program also delivered direct workforce impact:
7 new full-time jobs created
15 jobs safeguarded
12 students or interns progressed into employment opportunities
This reinforced the link between innovation support and long-term workforce development.
Building Long-Term Regional Capability
Beyond individual business improvements, the program helped strengthen the wider regional innovation ecosystem.
It improved collaboration between:
Colleges
Universities
Local authorities
Industry support organisations
Manufacturing SMEs
Independent evaluation concluded that the model is now embedded within the regional innovation landscape, creating a lasting legacy for business growth, skills development, and economic resilience.
Why This Matters to Your Business
These results demonstrate what is possible when practical innovation support is applied correctly.
For SMEs, it shows that:
Small changes can deliver large performance gains
Innovation does not need to be complex or expensive
External support can unlock internal capability
Measurable improvement is achievable in a short timeframe
If you want to improve efficiency, reduce downtime, or explore where innovation could make a real difference in your operation, the next step is a simple conversation.
No jargon. No complexity. Just practical discussion about what is possible.
